GAZETTEERS DEPARTMENT

  1. Outline of Activity : -
  2. One of the important activities of an academic nature, which the State Government has undertaken after the dawn of independence, is the revision compilation and publication of the District Gazetteers of the State.

Though a Gazetteer literally means only a geographical index or a geographical dictionary, the word Gazetteer has acquired a comprehensive connotation in Indian usage. It not only includes a comprehensive description of the physical and natural features of a region but also a broad narrative of the social, political, economic, and cultural life of the people living in a district. Physical features, natural resources, history, customs and manners of the people, trade, agricultural, industry, communication, administrative department, voluntary social organisation and places of interest in a district are all topics covered in a District Gazetteer. Information about these topics is collected from the relevant departments of Government, from non-official agencies as also from responsible citizens. Due to its authoritative character and the great vlaue of the book as mine of information, administration, legislators men in public life, businessmen, scholars, teachers, and students alike consult the volume with great profit.

The Gazetteers were complied between 1874 and 1884 under the orders of the then Government and the publication of the whole series took over 27 years. These Gazetteers contained fairly extensive and authoritative information. Many of the accounts were contributed by men of learning and were distinguished by a high standard of quality. These Gazetteers complied over eighty years ago had long become scarce and entirely out of print. The statistical information contained in a Volumes had become entirely out of date. As a result of the integration of the State, now district came into existence while the boundaries of a number of districts underwent changes,

There was a general desire that there should be a new and revised that the old Gazetteers should be revised and areas for which separate Gazetteers were not available should be compiled afresh and published. In the revised edition an attempt has been made to give an idea of the latest developments, whether in regard to the administrative structure of the economic set-up or in regard to social, religious or cultural trends.

There are portions in the old Gazetteers bearing on archaeology and history which have the impress of profound scholarship and learning and their worth has not diminished by the mere passage of time. Even in their case, however, some restatement is occasionally necessary in view of later investigations and new archaeological discoveries by scholars and an attempt has been made to incorporate in the revised edition, the results of such subsequent research. The revision of the old Volumes has ,in fact, meant an entire rewriting of most of the chapters and sections. In doing so, statistical and other information is obtained from the relevant departments of Government, and articles on certain specialised subjects are obtained from competent scholars.

An important addition of the District Volumes in the revised edition is the Directory of Villages and Towns given at the end which contains in a tabulated form, useful information about every village and town in the district. The District map given in the revised edition is also large and up-to-date.

The revised Gazetteers in English were published in two series viz., General and District. The General or State series cover subjects which can best be treated for the State as a whole and not for the smaller area of a district. As at present planned they will deal with Physical Features, People and Their Culture, History, Language and Literature, Botany, Places of interest, Fauna and Public Administration. The District series contain one volume for every district of the state, each volume containing about 700 to 1000 printed pages. Besides the revised Gazetteers in English, this Department has already undertaken the work of preparation of District as well as State Gazetteers in Marathi.

Besides the schemes for revision and compilation of District as well as State Gazetteers in English and Marathi , this department is also engaged in publication of (1) Source Material for History of Freedom Movement in Maharashtra, (2) Who’s who of freedom fighters in Maharashtra and ) 3) Translation of collected works of Mahatma Gandhi in Marathi. The details of which given subsequently.

  3. Procedure adopted for preparation of Gazetteers :-
  4. For the compilation of the Gazetteers, this department is required to collect information and statistical data from various sources either by correspondence or personal contacts or no-the-spot investigation. The material so collected is classified, collated, scrutinized, tabulated and interpreted in order to draft the various chapters of the Volumes. The drafted and compiled material is scrutinized and edited before being sent to the press for printing. As the printing goes on, proof correction is done and the other aspects of the publication work are attended to.

     REPRINTING OF OLD GAZETTEER

The Old Gazetteers of the State, published in the British regime contained some invaluable information, which was not reproduced in the revised Volumes. These Gazetteers had gone out of stock and were not available and t the wealth of information given therein was in the danger of being denied in foreign countries. As such it was thought that the Gazetteer Volumes in the old series should be reprinted. The printing of which would be done by photocompose method will involve some 30 volumes. The Gazetteers

    3) SUPPLEMENTARIES TO DISTRICT GAZETTEERS

A supplementary is not something now but rather and adjunct or continuation of the parent volume. Supplements were issued from time to time to the Gazetteers volumes published in the old series. The object of issuing such supplements to District Gazetteers is to update the statistical data contained in the parent volume. The work of compilation and publication of the supplements to revised District Gazetteers has been undertaken and every attempt has been to bring the statistical data as up-to-date as possible.
